NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) is a precursor of glutathione in the body and a protected sulfur-containing amino acid. It is more stable than the sulfur-containing amino acid L-Cysteine. The antioxidant effects of NAC may explain its apparent ability to prevent adverse effects caused by toxic chemicals and drug reactions. NAC is used to treat acetaminophen poisoning by supporting the detoxification process of the liver. It is also used to treat bronchopulmonary disorders, cystic fibrosis and bronchitis.
